Challenges

Payments in Africa have always been a problem due to the lack of internet connectivity or the high price of mobile data hindering the development of banking services in the region. What PesaPesa aims to do is to decentralize payments between businesses and individuals by providing direct payments between users. PesaPesa allows users to transfer money directly between them even without Internet connection.

Solution

Caldora turned to Tmz Software to create a mobile experience using the Flutter platform. By leveraging our deep experience, UI/UX design, and project management, we delivered a working app. Since then we worked together on new features and improved the user experience. The project is still ongoing.

Impact

The MVP testing has been a success being used by over 200 people by 9 shops and 12 street vendors. The users were very pleased with the product and they enjoyed this new method of payment.

App Presentation

One of the application’s key functionalities is the dashboard interface. This feature provides users with a comprehensive view of all their financial data. It shows them their current balance and their transactions history. Also, it allows them to request of the receive money from the other users of the application. The user can have multiple currencies available in the application, making the switch between them a breeze. The sending and receiving of money is done via a proprietary QR code based system that ensures a safe and secure transaction between the users.

When a user requests money they need to enter the amount and the desired currency then they are showed a QR code that they need to present to the other user. Once the QR code is scanned the other user needs to repeat the scan on their side to confirm the transaction. This two step process make sure that the transactions are valid without needing internet connectivity. The main benefit of using this method is that payments can be made even in areas with low internet connectivity or where internet is not available at all.

The application uses a proprietary QR code system that allows payments to happen without the need of internet connection. PesaPesa generates a pair of QR codes which validates the transaction offline. This system requires no internet connection while the payment is happening however once in a while the system needs to synchronize and send the data to the server for the users to be able to withdraw their money.

This functionality is what sets PesaPesa apart and makes them an innovator in the field. We are excited to see what the future of payments will bring us and we are glad to keep working on it.
